Please note that the facility will be closed on Monday, September 1 because of Labor Day. During this time, the doors will be locked and you will need to have authorized 24/7 HUID key access (Harvard researchers only) to use open access instrumentation. Our staff will also be off on Monday so we will be unable to run samples for you. We will return on Tuesday. Have a great holiday!
We just received the Agilent 6550 q-TOF high resolution tandem mass spectrometer. We are very excited about using this instrument and seeing how it can complement existing technologies in our laboratory. It will be installed and ready to use by the end of the month. This instrument has ion-funnel and Jetstream heated ESI source for high sensitivity.
Our Northwest Laboratories Building Operations has just installed a new Parker Hannifin Nitrogen Generator system that is fully redundant and can supply >250 L/minute of ultra-high purity nitrogen for our mass spectrometers. This is an impressive system that was designed by Jim Sheehan and his staff and is going to make our lab even more efficient. We used to rely on boil-off from liquid nitrogen dewars which does not have a consistent output, and causes a lot of wasted cryogen. Read more about Parker Hannifin Nitrogen Generator System
Our Waters MALDI-TOF lost its Penning gauge (device for measuring pressure) when coming back up from a system vent. We were able to replace it this week and it is now pumped down and ready to use. If you would like to use it, please proceed through the normal SPINAL reservation and try it out. Let me, Sunia know if you experience any problems. Also, if you notice it is not working, please let us know so we can try to fix it.
In response to popular demand, bulk rates will be offered to non-profit organizations when a large number of LC-MS or GC-MS samples are submitted for running with the same method. This type of discount was already offered to Harvard University researchers, and will now be extended to non-profit organizations. Please note, the non-profit rates are always higher to recover the overhead rate paid on government grants which partially subsidize our core facility. For details on what you will pay as a researcher from a non-Harvard non-profit organization, please check out the following link: Read more about Multiple Sample Discounts for Non-Profits
We are grateful to Thermo for placing a "seed" q-Exactive in our lab for metabolomics applications. This is a high resolution FT mass spectrometer based on Orbitrap technology which is capable of obtaining ~140,000 resolution. The instrument will come with a Thermo uHPLC for LC-MS experiments. We look forward to the opportunity of investigating how the unique features of this instrument can benefit and complement existing technologies in our lab.
